The Wailua Area encompasses the general area north of the Wailua River on Kauai's eastern side.

Upper Wailua, also called Wailua Homesteads, consists of single family residential homes and lots primarily in smaller sized subdivisions with lots ranging from 1/4 to 1/2 an acre in size. The entrance to this area is enjoyable as you drive past several ancient Hawaiian sites, scenic river views, swaying palm trees and you pass by the Opaeka'a Falls waterfall.

The lower Wailua area is along the coastline and is generally called Kauai's Coconut Coast. Wailua River State Park ranges over 1,000 acres and includes Lydgate Park, some archeological sites, and a picnic area at the south side of the river. The Wailua River is a long, slowly meadering river that starts at the Wai'ale'ale Crater and is fed by several tributaries on the way to the ocean. Several forks in the river lead to waterfalls and can be easily explored by kayak. At the mouth of the river are several large stones with ancient petroglyphs carvings on them. Viewing of these stones is dependant on the amount of sand in the area. Heavy rains often wash away the sand and reveal the carvings.

The most popular river trip is to the sacred Fern Grotto. Flat bottom cruise boats carry visitors 40 minutes up the river to this natural wonder. This freshwater river is a popular site for cruise boats, kayaks, ski boats, and outrigger canoes.

Wailua Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in Kauai and feeds into the Wailua River.

'Opaeka'a Falls is located off the north branch of the Wailua River, this fall is not accessible by river or trail. An overlook, however, off Kuamo'o Road provides an excellent and safe viewing area. The falls flow year-round, unlike many waterfalls on the island that are dependent on heavy rains. The best viewing time for these lacy falls is mid-morning when the sun is in the proper position for photographing this picture-perfect site.

Nearby Kinipopo Shopping Village, Wailua Shopping Plaza and The Coconut Marketplace offer a variety of retail shops and restaurants, including everything you need to purchase or rent for water activities.
